Dissertation Excerpt: My dissertation, The Semiotic Fabric of Life: A Study of Walker Peryc's Essays and Novels, discusses a major shift halfway through Percy's writing career towards semiotic symbolism. In this chapter, I examine Percy's first book, The Moviegoer, as a contrast to show the marked change between the symbolism he uses in his first three novels and that of his latter three. The symbols used here are not Percy's unique semiotic symbols of his later writings.
