Humanities 420 Review for Final
See syllabus for date of your Final Exam. Your Final will follow the pattern of one of the
sample Finals below; read and study your poems to perform well on an exam such as the following:
Final A
Identify selected poetry passages by the following items:
(A) Author of poem
(B) Title of poem
(C) Literal meaning of poem (what is physically happening)
(D) Theme (author's idea or message he is conveying)
(E) Literary elements (underline or circle in passage and
identify name of element in blank)
Final B
Assignment:
1) Pick ONE of the poets on our syllabus or on one of our handouts, that we have discussed in class.
2) Choose at least THREE poems of that poet.
3) Discuss common themes, images, literary elements such as diction, style, metaphors, structure, symbols, allusions, etc. Discuss reasons for these common themes and literary elements based on the author's life, times, beliefs, influences.
4) Use examples from the poem to support your thoughts.
5) Use two sources outside of the poems and document these sources with a bibliography page; either APA or MLA style. These sources may be obtained from the internet, books of criticism, MLA bibliography.
6) Refer to the sources in your paper and document them with in-text citations.
7) This should be approx. 4 pages long (reasonable font and margins).

Instructions:
1) Please attach this cover sheet to the front of your word processed answers to this Final.
2) Please devote at least two pages of writing in traditionally sized font and margins to answer each question, for a total of eight, preferably more, pages. Answer ALL the questions.
3) Any outside sources you use MUST be cited with penalty of "0" (zero) for plagiarism otherwise. Fellow students and knowledgeable friends are not allowed as sources.
4) This will count 25% of your Final grade.
5) Use EXAMPLES, quoted and paraphrased, from the poems to support your point.
6) Use different poems for each of these questions.
Questions:
1) Choose a theme/common motif that you see in Robert Frost's poetry and use examples from his poems that support the theme you identified.
2) Choose a theme/common motif from William Blake's poetry and with examples from his poems, support your point. Discuss Blake's paradigm of religious development.
3) Choose three poems that illustrate the views of the Romantic period. Begin by identifying characteristics of Romanticism and how it originated, then show them in the poems you choose.
4) Choose two contemporary poems and discuss how they illustrate the views of modern or postmodern society, and contrast them with two poems from earlier centuries, discussing how themes and world views of poets (people) have changed over the centuries.
